Student Success Stories with Cayton Heath

Cayton Heath of Cayton Heath Photography has been a photographer for over 10 years and specializes in newborn, maternity and family photography. She has always struggled with the business side of what she does and found coaching to be encouraging and insightful.

Cayton is a member of The Six-Figure Studio and also took my courses, The Missing Link and Simply Posed. In this conversation, we cover how she moved and started her business over three times, her successes and the advice she has for fellow photographers!

Starting anew...three times!

Cayton shared that she started her business using a camera her friend lent her, which I just love because I also started my business using a borrowed camera! We are living proof that you don't need to start out with all the gear in order to be successful. And Cayton is living proof that one can be successful even in the face of having to relocate and restart their business not once but three times!

Cayton's business launched in California and then she moved to Florida, then Ohio and then back to California, each time having to start over. This is not an easy thing to do, but Cayton did it with gumption and built a very successful business in the process!

How Cayton found me.

Over the years Cayton invested in a lot of different photography education courses but ultimately found that none of them taught her what she really wanted and needed to learn. Facing a particularly challenging lighting situation in her home studio, Cayton set off searching for a way to create natural looking light with artificial lighting, and that's how she found my book! Cayton was hooked on my straightforward, simple way of teaching and decided to enroll in more of my courses.

Having taken three of my classes, Cayton is now breezing through her sessions without fear. Where there was once nervousness, there is now confidence and professionalism. Cayton shared that she tends to overcomplicate things, but found that my courses gave her the permission she needed to return to the basics.

As a member of The Six-Figure Studio, Cayton is currently working hard at creating consistency in her business through her lighting and editing style. She's been able to refine and improve her existing systems and expressed that the group coaching program has really helped bring everything together for her.

Cayton's advice.

Cayton's advice was that it is okay to be stuck and not know exactly what you want. She recommends putting yourself out there, trying different things and investing in education. This last bit was truly the game changer in Cayton's experience! Even being more than 10 years into being an entrepreneur, Cayton is still figuring herself out! And I think this is refreshing to hear, because we don't need to be a perfect version of ourselves in order to have a successful business.
