The 3 Things You Need to Know to Create Your Ideal Light

If you've been curious about wanting to use strobes and flash in your work but don't know where to start, this is the perfect episode for you. Whether you prefer light and airy or dark and moody, your style and brand is determined by how you use your light. Learning how to create your own light allows you to be in control of your work!

HIGHLIGHTS

1. Size

The size of your light source determines the quality of your light. When you start shopping for modifiers, it can be overwhelming. There are so many shapes and sizes of modifiers! However, all you need to know is the larger the light source, the softer the light.

2. Distance

The closer your light is to the subject, the softer your light will be. This is another way you can control your light quality. A large modifier closer to the subject will create a very soft light. The closer your light is to the subject, then the brighter the light will be as well.

3. Power

You need to know what you like so you can adjust your power accordingly. I love soft light and a shallow depth of field. I love shooting wide-open. I use a big modifier, close to my subject. Since the light is also very bright, I turn the power down until I reach the aperture I need to shoot. I recommend using a handheld light meter to determine exactly where you want that power to be.
