Stop Asking the WRONG Questions!

Did you know that I used to be a proud natural light photographer? I took a lot of pride in being able to see light and use it. It's one of the superpowers of photographers! Part of the reason why I was so invested in being a natural light photographer was that I didn't know how to use strobes and flash and create the light I wanted to. Today on the podcast, we are diving into the right and wrong questions to ask about artificial lighting.

HIGHLIGHTS

When I started using artificial lighting, I made some mistakes.

To be honest, I used to believe it was about the gear. I started asking people what gear I needed to get a really soft, natural look. I thought my light looked harsh because of the gear I was using. It turns out, it's not about the gear—it's about how you use it.

I also get a lot of questions about my settings, but they may or may not work for you. I remember one time I spent $2000 for a workshop and got the photographer's settings. The problem was, her situation was different from mine! Using her settings in my studio didn't reproduce the look I had gotten in the workshop.

Instead of asking what gear and what settings you need, ask how to use the gear to get the look. Ask what you need to know to get those settings. Once you have the answers to those questions, you'll be able to create the light you are looking for.
