Three Marketing Mistakes to Avoid This Month (And Every Month)

Whether you want to gain more clients, earn more money or make the transition form hobbies to pro, this is information that you need to know! I’m sharing 3 common marketing mistakes I see photographers make all the time, how to avoid them and what to focus on instead.

HIGHLIGHTS

#1: Saying yes to all the things.

This is a super tricky mistake to avoid as small business owners. When I was first getting started, I said yes to everything including maternity, newborns, weddings, real estate, dogs, headshots and products. If I was asked, I said yes.

If you do this, you will wear yourself out and end up doing a lot of work you don’t like doing. Nothing will kill your love for photography faster than doing what you don’t want to do because you feel that you should.

This will also muddy your brand and confuse your potential clients. Instead of driving to do all the things, figure out what you do, focus on what you love and what you want to be known for and then do that with intention.

#2: Telling yourself that taking and sharing pretty pictures are all it takes to run a successful photography business.

Talented artists go out of business every day. When you run a photography business, taking and producing beautiful photos is just one piece of the pie. Is it an important piece? Yes!

However, you also need to know what you do so you can talk about it. You need to know who your unique ideals clients are, and you need a messaging and marketing plan in place to help communicate to those people in a clear and concise way.

#3: Paying for advertising before having a proven plan for organic marketing.

Paying for Facebook ads or boosting a post on Instagram seems like a quick and easy way to get more clients. The reality is, paying for advertising without a proven plan is like throwing noodles at a wall to see what sticks, or worse, dollars bills at the internet. Paid advertising may put more eyes on what you are promoting, but the only eyes that matter are your those of your ideal clients.

Before you start paying for ads, you need to know who you serve. Paid ads work, but only if you have a proven marketing plan already established. That starts with having a clearly defined brand and a communication plan in place that helps you speak directly to your people in a clear and concise way.

If you need help with doing any of this—getting clear on what you do, knowing who you serve or putting together a communication plan, please let me know!

This is exactly the kind of information I help photographers with inside of the Six Figure Studio. I’ve helps hundreds of photographers around the world through that program. The framework I teach works, and I know it will work for you.
