Behind the Scenes: Photographing a Baby In Studio

In this behind-the-scenes video, I'm photographing a three-month-old baby and her parents in my Seattle studio using the same simple one-light setup I use for most of my newborn and family sessions.

I don't believe lighting needs to be complicated, or that you need a huge studio, multiple lights, or elaborate setups to create beautiful, natural-looking photographs.

My goal is always to create soft light that feels like beautiful window light, while giving me the consistency and control of a strobe.

In this video you'll see:

  • My one-light studio setup

  • Where I position my strobe and modifier

  • How I photograph a baby and parents with the same setup

  • What a real session looks like when you're working with actual families, not professional models
