You Don't Have to Run Your Photography Business in Isolation!

During a coaching call with my level two mentoring program, Amplified, we had a conversation about some of the harder parts of running a business that don't get talked about enough.

Like those moments in your business when you kind of question everything. When you ask yourself, what am I even doing? I could go out and get a job and not deal with all the hardships of being an entrepreneur and running my own business. So this conversation was really helpful for us.

Here’s the truth.

I think there's a lot out there in the photography world about living your dreams and I totally believe all of that, but it's also true that it can be really hard and scary. Sometimes it can even feel isolating, and those are very real feelings that a lot of people experience.

The photography industry is unique in that unlike other businesses, you don't need a lot of capital to get your business going. Most industries go into business knowing that they're not going to be profitable for five years or so, sometimes even more! And as photographers, we start our business with a camera and that's it. We don't have funding, and we have these expectations that we're going to be profitable early on.

The truth is that photography can be a lonely job. As photographers, we tend to learn in isolation and we start our businesses differently. Not only are we starting our businesses with nothing but our ambition and a camera, but we also create art without any feedback or help from peers. We guess our way through building a business, setting our prices and building our portfolio, and we end up being the ones who have to judge our work. This can lend itself to feelings of isolation and self-doubt.

I want to remind you that you don't have to do it alone. I have created a community for people so they don't have to feel like they're on their own. Everybody feels that way at some stage of running a business and it's important to surround yourself with a community so that you have support.

There are places for photographers to find community, like coaching programs. And it's part of the reason I'm building my Certification Program. I know I've been talking about my Certification a lot lately, and it's because I'm so excited! Be sure to get on the waitlist so you can get all the information and updates you need. We'll be sending out applications to our waitlist first, so be sure to join it here!
