Hi friends, my name is Sandra Coan. I’m an award-winning photographer, industry educator and best-selling author on a mission to help other photographers reach the level of success they want and deserve.
Today’s episode will tell my story of how I became a successful photographer, why I am so passionate about photography and the photography industry and share my goals for this podcast, so you know what to expect.

My story:
In 1999 I was a full-time kindergarten teacher, barely making ends meet, and I even qualified for food stamps. It was a stressful time.
At the time, I considered photography a hobby and decided to do a fun maternity shoot for my pregnant friend. The photos were so well received from my friend group that they encouraged me to offer maternity photos as a side job.
Within one year, I was able to do teaching part-time and do photography the other half.
Three years later, I quit my job as a teacher, and thus, Sandra Coan Photography was born, and I’ve been doing it ever since.
Why I do what I do:
I was able to turn a side-hustle into a multiple six-figure studio, and I am proud of it.
I wrote the book, Crafting the Natural Light Look: The One-Light Approach to Creating Striking Portraits with a Strobe or Flash.
I also launched my signature course, The Missing Link: A Film Photographer’s Guide to Off-Camera Lighting.
Both teach creating natural-looking light using strobes and flash.
Learning this one skill took my business to the next level. Consistently beautiful light helped develop my signature style and brand.
With 20 years in the industry, I learned that having a strong brand is essential, and that my brand came from consistency.
Now, my goal is to help other photographers gain clarity around their brand and build their business, all while getting better at their craft.
Goals of this podcast:
I will have three different types of podcasts: solo episodes, guest speakers and previous students front my course, The Missing Link. That way I can bring you the best information from all different spectrums.
